What is it?
It is a very common condition that causes inflammation of the eyelid margin and usually involves all four eyelids. It is very difficult to control as it tends to recur.
Forms of blepharitis
- The anterior, where the source of inflammation is secretions and crusts on the eyelashes. It can be further divided into staphylococcal or seborrheic depending on the cause.
- Posterior or chronic, where the inflammation is localized to the meibomian glands which have become blocked. Rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis usually coexists. These glands are responsible for the secretion of the lipid layer of the tears.
Symptoms of Blepharitis
- Discomfort and tearing. Sensitivity to light.
- Burning and foreign body sensation in the eyes.
- Frequent hail and hailstones.
